Opera attire in Florence?

Is there a dress code for attendees of the opera in Florence?

Depends on what opera company. Is it a big time outfit with big time singers? The place I've ever seen a written policy is La Scala, which states "Gentlemen are requested to wear jackets and ties for performances."
But a jacket for men is a good thing to have. You don't want to look like a complete slob at a major cultural event.

No, there is no dress code, but if you are attending a performance at the new ultramodern opera house, I have noticed the public is on average dressing better for the new house than for the old one. On a clear day you can arrive early and climb to the roof of the building that is is new vantage point for observing the city. Stairs are external so the climb to the roof can be done at any time even if the house is closed.
