I would like to attend La Traviata in Venice in Sept. I know little about opera, but can't pass up the opportunity of seeing one at the Fenice. Any advice for a first time opera goer? If I can get a ticket, should I try for seating in the Galleria, Loggione, or Placo?
Just remember that there will be no supertitles in English, so you might want to buy a libretto with translation to follow along. And watch out for the seats right behind a column. Srsly.
We were not able to attend an opera at La Fenice but toured the opera house. There is not a bad seat in the house. It is not that large and the seats looked so elegant and comfy. BTW, we have seen La Traviata and loved it and you will have no problem following the story-wonderful music-I am envious!
Try to get a DVD (with subtitles) from the library and preview it before you go. If DVD is not available get the CD and you can listen to it and follow the libretto at the same time.
Although most of the seats at La Fenice are good, there are indeed some bad seats. And those are the ones where there is a big column right in front of the seat, between you and the stage. Not surprisingly those are the last tickets to sell. And peering around the column is not an option because you're pinned in on both sides by other seats. They should tell you that at the box office. And since La Fenice is not particularly huge, those operas almost always sell out.
It looks like there are still seats available at all prices for the performances. (I was surprised, as when we went to La Scala we bought tickets the moment they went online, and still had limited choice.). The seats are noted if they have poor or no visibility. "SOLO ASCOLTO" (listen only) must mean view is so blocked you can only hear, but not see, the performance. The impaired view seats are marked "Scarsa vis." Beyond avoiding these, I would choose based on what price you are comfortable with.
After touring La Fenice, I would give anything to go to the opera there! I hope you go to see it!
