Open markets in Florence

Does anyone know the hours of operation for the main markets in Florence. We are interested in either San Lorenzo or Mercato Nuovo (Mercato Poracellino). We will be there in mid June of this year. Also, of these 2 markets, is one more preferable than the other? Or are they basically the same? Thank you, Linda

The Porcellino market is a tourist market (souvenirs, leather items, etc.). The San Lorenzo has an indoor market (food) and an open air section (again, souvenirs and leather). S. Ambrogio is indoor and is a food market. - The food markets at S. Lorenzo and S. Ambrogio are a bit on the expensive side, but you could live and eat out of them (some stalls are expensive, some are better). Both are open only in the morning (but the first floor at S. Lorenzo is a sort of self-service or take away restaurant and it is open till midnight, at least in non-covid times). Open air markets are open till about 6pm.

The market of the Porcellino is a small market and definitely a tourist trap that sells souvenirs and leather products. I’m sure you’ll pass by it numerous times since it’s next to Piazza Signoria on the way to Ponte Vecchio.
The Mercato Centrale di San Lorenzo is an absolute must for any visitors in Florence. That is where you should definitely visit. Not just the street vendors on via dell’Ariento and surrounding streets (featuring mostly apparel, leather products, and souvenirs, sold from a cart or “barroccio” in Florentine), but especially the food market building on Via dell’Ariento (closes by 2pm so go in the morning). It is frequented by both tourists and locals.
Sant’Ambrogio, in the neighborhood of Santa Croce, is mostly frequented by Florentines (my father used to go there for groceries sometimes since parking was easier than at San Lorenzo), but it has become increasingly popular with tourists as well. It’s good for produce, if you like markets it’s another one to consider There are also neighborhood markets in various districts, but not necessarily open every day.

There are also different markets outdoors at Piazza Santo Spirito in the Oltrarno area of Florence.
Each day has a different type of market, and I don't know if there is one every day of the week.
Some sell clothes, some food, some only organic products.
Still worth a look.
The market at San Lorenzo is mainly leather and similar stuff outdoors, and food indoors.
I have found over the years that the indoor market has become less and less enjoyable there.
San Ambrogio is better for quality.
