Open Jaw Flights to VCE

I am planning a trip to Italy for April 2011 (out of JFK on 4/6, return on 4/17 Easter Sunday). Flying into Venice and out of Rome. In going through all the past posts it sounds like people are saying that the best prices are usually posted 120-90 days out from the flight. Does that sound right? Currently flights are in the $935 pp round trip + taxes/fees. I called Delta directly and that woman was less than helpful. Can anyone give me some clues on when to take the plunge and purchase in terms of price range? Current prices feel high...or is it because I feel poor?! Kayak and Yapta have only left me with more questions.
My plan is to stop looking at prices once I get the tickets but I'd like some experienced thoughts on a better price range, if possible. Thanks!

Searched Travelocity: you can fly Iberia on those exact dates, with a stopover in Madrid going and coming, for $875.10 per person all taxes & fees included. Personally I think a price in the $900 vicinity is a very good price for that itinerary.

$935 roundtrip is not a bad price. Chances are it will probably go lower, but they could also go up. Guessing airfare is a crap shoot. On www.bing.com/travel the price for that trip on Iberia is not $797. I would jump on that price immediately. It won't get much lower then that.

Sorry I meant the price is now $797 not that it is not $797.

I would rather book directly with the airline and the rates are below 900 with taxes included

Those "people" saying the fares are best 2 to 4 months out were mainly one person. Some of us followed his advice and got burned. When you see a fare you like, grab it as the "sales" may not occur or may not be on good routes. And isn't Easter on April 24 in 2011? You'll need to know that for you planning in Italy. Easter Week is a busy time, but if you are returning 4/17 you'll miss it.

If that price includes taxes and fees, it's a good deal. We did the same flight pattern last month out of Cincinnati. Our flights were $948. I would just make sure your flight times are good with only one stop and not long layovers. We flew to Paris then to Venice. The way home Rome to Paris to cinti..
Good luck.

Lisa, I also think any airfare with your flight plan that is between $900 and $950 is a pretty decent fare. I would grab it and not look back. The fares may go down for a bit but generally, they climb and from what I have been hearing in the last several months, it is predicted that airfare will not be going down much in the future. Happy travels!
