Open beaches end of April?

We will be staying near Viareggio the last couple days in April. I expect the water to be too cold for swimming, but what can I expect for services on or near the beach? Will beach chair be out already or will the beach still be free? We'll be staying there just before the May Day weekend. Will beach cafes be open yet?

Have no experience with that area at that time but would assume not much activity given that it could still be pretty chilly at that time -- not like So Florida at the same time. That areas is roughly as far north as Chicago so you would not spend much time on the beaches around Chicago in late April.

What a great website! I didn't know tripadvisor had weather information that was so detailed. I'll be able to use this for lots of things!

Cindy,i'm afraid you are out of luck.On that time of the year beaches are not open even down south. You can enjoy a stroll or a sit down on the sand, but as far as services who cater to the beachgoers such as coffee shops and pizzerias located right next to the sand, they won't be open until early june.other establishments further from the beach function normally year around.

Viareggio is a dull beach town out of season.

Do you have to be there? Lucca isn't far away.

It sounds like we need to change our plans. I have a teen-aged son who LOVES the beach and asked that we try to fit one into our itinerary. But I think we have to concede that we are simply not going to be in Italy during a time that a sand beach (we will be in CT for 3 days) is going to be worthwhile. I think we'll detour inland. Thank you so much for the feedback. I wanted honest suggestions, and I believe you gave me that. We'll change our plan, which is fine. And yes, inland to Lucca sounds like a better possibility. Thanks!!
