open afternoon in Florence

Hey all,

We will have an open afternoon for about 4 hours in Florence. Instead of a tour we were looking for something we could do on our own. Something that most tourists don't know about and is inside the city. Any recommendations ?

Also, What are the rules for tipping private guides in Italy?

Wander! Just turn left (or right) is the lane you are on is busy. Also, window shop and have snack/lunch in the Mercato Centrale - amazing fragrances, sites and tastes.

We took a cab to the Piazza Michelangelo, which had a beautiful view overlooking the river and the city.

If it's very hot out, go to the Ferragamo Shoe Museum.
It's wonderfully airconditioned, and a great look into the history of the company.
Also, the Bargello Museum is superb, and is never crowded.
You'd have to check opening days beforehand of course.
Both are right in the city.
Then there are the lovely Bardini Gardens and Bardini Museum; also places that are always uncrowded.
They are just slightly up the hill from the Ponte Vecchio, on the Oltrarno side of the river.

Maybe the 20 minute bus ride up to Fiesole?

Piazzale Michelangelo and San Miniato - which is a climb up above it - are both highly recommended. I will say, though, that Piazza Michelangelo isn't a spot which "tourists don't know about" by any means so I wouldn't expect to enjoy it without company!

We got to and from the piazzale, and San Miniato, on foot so you don't have to take public transit if you're a walker.
