We are picking up the car in Venice and dropping it off in Rome (where we will catch a plane back home)- my first post sounded like we are picking up a car in both cities. Sorry for the confusion and thank you for your help.
How difficult is the drive between Venice and Florence? Any suggestions as to stops along the way? Thanks so much!! Melissa
We drove from Venice down the coast to Ravenna then across country-thru the winding hills- Very Long- suggest auto route and maybe stop in Verona then down to Florence. Depending on your time - certainly getting off the beaten track is much more fun.
The drive between Venice and Florence is easy - it's freeway all the way. The stops along the way would include Padua and Bologna, but both are larger towns where driving in is a little congested.
I've never drove from Florence to Venice, but given my experience on the autostrada I'm sure it's as easy as Doug describes. I wrote to suggest that you consider Shelley's advice-- even if you don't take the backroads the entire way, the primary benefit of having a car is to visit places not on the heavily trodden tourist trail. If that's not in the cards, I'm sure you know by the now, your car is useless in Florence and you can always take the train between Rome, Florence, Venice. Did we cover that in another thread? Sorry if it's a repeat.
