I arrive in Milan Bergamo airport at 4:30 this Thursday and fly out again at 6:30 am on Sunday. Is it worth it to try to go to Rome for the day on Friday and Saturday or should I go somewhere closer, such as Verona or Genova?

You'll be spending a good portion of your time travelling if you head to Rome. I would say stay up north and visit a closer city.

You know, I'm going to suggest an even easier solution. Just stay in Bergamo. It has a charming historic center and for the short time you will be there, plenty of things to do and local flavor to soak up. Bergamo is quite a bit off the typical American tourist radar, so you should see more locals and perhaps a few Brits since RyanAir flys there.
