Only 5 hours in Florence

We are taking an early morning train from Rome to Florence. We will have only 5 or 6 hours in Florence (don't ask) and I want to see the David so definitely will make reservations for the museum. What else is nearby that we should see? There will be three adults. How far away is the Duomo? Would we have time to do both? This will be for March. Also, can you recommend places for a quick lunch? We will be picking up our reserved car at 3:00pm.

Thanks for any suggestions.

The Duomo is very close to the Accademia - you can walk it in under 10 min. Lunch possibility - the Mercato Centrale, close to the train station. The Museo San Marco is even closer to the Accademia, and well worth a look. I wouldn’t say you have time to include the Uffizi, but you could go explore the Piazza della Signoria. You could also walk along the Arno River and cross the various bridges, enjoying the views. A somewhat unusual suggestion: the Palazzo Davanzati, a.k.a. the museum of the Florentine house, which lets you see how the Florentines lived in Renaissance times. Anyhow the historical center of Florence is really relatively small and very walkable.

There is baggage storage on Platform 16 at the SM Novella station. Where is the car pickup? It’s assumed you are cognizant of ZTL issues and will have an IDP.

With 5 hours, I would go to the Accademia, then would go up the Duomo for the spectacular views, then walk around the Duomo and Piazza della Signoria areas and along the river and the Ponte Vecchio. I wouldn’t spend much time on lunch, something super quick with no waiting in line.
