Online Trenitalia tickets

Hello fellow travelers,

I just purchased my train tickets online (today) on the trenitalia website for September, departing Stresa (9:40AM) and arriving in Lucca (via Milan & Florence).

My question is this...

I didn't see the option to "print at home". I've not received an email confirming my purchase, although I did print the receipt giving me the ticket numbers, which appeared on the post payment page. I also printed the summary of my tickets.

I did not register prior to purchasing my tickets because I didn't have all the information required to do so.

Anyway, when I try to, "manage my ticket", and enter my name and "Recovery Code", I get the option to "Re-Send email" (with details of purchase) I then get this message:

The email was sent successfully.

However, I have not received an email confirming my purchase details. How long does this process take?

Any ideas?

Thank You!

Priscilla

did you copy down the PNR code? It is three letters followed by numbers, that is all you need to show the conductor for ticket purchased on line. There is no ticket to print out but the email they send includes a PDF attachment with all the info.

I have used my gmail account and have received the email really quickly with the PNR code, date/time of travel, carriage/seat number.

Perhaps check your spam folder?

Thanks Holly & Lola!

I've checked my spam folder multiple times and it's definitely empty.

Holly, I did not see a PNR code. I only have the ticket numbers and the recovery code which consists of numbers but no letters.

I've not purchased tickets online via trenitalia before and thought it would be an easy process.

On previous trips to Italy I've purchased my tickets on the automatic kiosks without any issues but wanted to save a few €'s this time. ;-)

Darioalb,

Thank you!

Yes, my email ends in .net!

So trenitalia does not recognize emails ending in .net?

I will try using my google email when I get home.

I hope this works!

Priscilla,
If you are not successful printing at home, I believe you can use the recovery code to print at a station in Italy.

Hi Priscilla! I bought my tickets, using a .net address and I received a QR code (via pdf attachment) as well as a PNR number. It did take a while to receive, though.

Darioalb,

Grazie mille! It worked! I used my gmail account and I've printed my tickets!

I wonder why trenitalia doesn't like emails ending with .net?

Laurel, Thanks! That was my plan B ;-)

Thanks Keickerman!

How interesting... So I presume I may get the email later on tonight or tomorrow.

I've always used my email ending in .net when buying train tickets online for France and Spain, so it never entered my mind that I'd have issues when buying tickets for Italy.

A couple of questions...

How does one register on the trenitalia website without a "Tax code / VAT"?

Is there a way I can get my train tickets on my iPhone? I know there is a trenitalia app but it looks like it's only useful for those who have a registered Italian address.

Thanks!

Trenitalia seems to like. edu addresses. The emails I got had all kinds of links, including one to download the barcode for the ticket which can be scanned on your phone. There were also lots of details with methods of presenting the ticket. Amazingly they include printing the thing at home, which is what I did.

I have used my .net address for Trenitalia for years, even before I registered.

Hi Zoe,

It's so strange, but for whatever reason, Trenitalia didn't like my .net email address.

Zoe, how does one register without a tax code?

Enjoy the rest of your trip!

Lo,
Thanks for the information!

Unfortunately I don't have an .edu address, but my son & daughter do, so I will consider sending the ticket information to their address in the future.

There is no need to register. Once you receive the email, it will have all the information you need.
I live in Italy and have never registered and travel quite often.

I think you could get your codice fiscale in a website that calculates it (it's a mix of your name, date of birth and country), but there is really no need.

It seems that not all .net addresses are flagged as suspicious, but nobody knows the exact reason. Some say it's an anti-fraud/spam security setting by Trenitalia that was mistakenly flagged years ago. Others say that the "mail was sent successfully" message means that trenitalia mail servers get a wrong "ok" reply from the .net mail server abroad, so they don't even realize there is a problem. I simply believe that Trenitalia hates us all, They just joined the dark side.

How does one register on the trenitalia website without a "Tax code / VAT"?

An italian tax code (aka a codice fiscale) is calculated using a public algorithm. It just shortens your name, surname, place and date of birth into an alphanumerical code. The algorithm has always been "open", there are ton of web sites where you can get your own codice fiscale.

Bear in mind that MR from Milan is right: you don't need to register to get e-tickets on trenitalia.com

To tell the truth, if you noted down the PNR code, car and seat numbers you don't need trenitalia's mail, either. The PNR is your authority to travel, as I've read on tripadvisor: "you could write it on the palm of your hand, show your open hand to the conductor and he couldn't care less".

On Regionale trains it's different, they must scan the barcode either from a piece of paper or from a display. Low battery=big fine.

Is there a way I can get my train tickets on my iPhone?

I guess you mean if you don't have Internet access while abroad. I prefer the "hand solution", but... what about saving the PDF with the PNR / bar code on the local memory of your iPhone?
Incidentally, one day of wi-fi internet access costs 1 eurocent on Freccia-something trains.

Ciaran, Thanks for the link and for explaining about the MyCicero app!

MR, Thanks! I understand that there is no need to regiter on the trenitalia website.
I did get an email via my gmail address but still nothing on my .net email.
It's all good though, I've already printed my tickets and now I just have to wait till September!

Darioalb,

Thanks for taking the time to answer all my questions!

I will keep this in mind:
