online booking loyalty club rates for Rome hotels?

On a number of Rome hotel websites, when I go to the "book now" page to see rates, I'm seeing a pop up box on my screen offering "loyalty" rates. They offer a "best rate" which is lower than what the hotel seems to offer, and a "sign in to get an extra discount" rate, which appears to be about $12/night less than the least expensive rate on the page. I haven't signed up because I'm not sure if it's legit....and not sure whether there's a downside. Has anyone used this in the past, and if so what's your experience been?

Thanks!

These discounts are generally offered by chain hotels, and as far as I know are legitimate. I belong to several for our US travel ( Best Western among others), and benefit both from discounts and free night stays with the points earned.

I joined the H10 hotel loyalty program ( this is a chain in Spain) to book our hotel in Barcelona and I believe we got breakfast included and other benefits. We liked the hotel a lot.

The only "downside" is I now get occasional emails from the company. I could "unsubscribe" from those if They bothered me, but they do not.

If you like the hotel, the price, and the location, take it.

Thanks, Lola! I don't think the hotel is part of a chain....but I could be mistaken. When I click on the box offering the lower loyalty rate, it asks me to log in through email, facebook, or google. When I choose email it asks for my email address and says it will send me a pin #?

I have also tried to contact the hotel directly to see if they have a rate lower than the one listed on the website (which is just slightly more than the other hotels I'm considering, and at the very high end of my price range). However, I think something may have been lost in translation (among other things, they greeted me by name but the name wasn't remotely similar to my own)....I think I was quoted a rate E7 less than the standard fully refundable rate on the website, but I was hoping to see whether I could get a discount on the non-refundable rate. I figured it didn't hurt to ask! :)
