One Week in Roma

I've perused many of the Roma tours and have come up with this itinerary that I would appreciate some input on. Hopefully I've not scheduled tours of sites that are closed on these days. Thanks in advance!

Saturday: Arrive about 1PM in city.
Quick lunch on the run. Walk Colliseum to the Forum, over Capital Hill to the Pantheon.
Sunday: Nat’l Museum of Rome and nearby Baths of Diocletian. PM: Dolce Vita stroll and wandering.
Monday: Vatican City: St. Peters Basilica, dome climb, Vatican Museum.
Tuesday: Side trip to Ostia Antica. Night Walk Across Rome from Campo de’ Fiori to Spanish steps
Wednesday: Borghese Gallery (reservation required) and Pilgrim’s Rome (churches Santa Maria Maggiore, San Clemente, and San Giovanni in Laterano).
Thursday: Food tour with local guide
Friday: Choice: Hadrian’s Villa, Appian Way and Catacombs, EUR, Castel Sant’Angelo, Testaccio sights, Baths of Caracalla, Cappuccin Crypt, shopping, more Vatican time, etc. Day trip to Naples/Pompeii?
Saturday: Flight to States departs at 6:30 AM

Looks like a good plan.

On Day One, are you arriving from North America and are you intending to actually tour all of those sites that afternoon? I ask because if you are jet-lagged, although it is an excellent idea to be outside and moving, it might be a bit much to take in all of those sites. The Colosseo and Forum are places I highly recommend using a guide.

On Friday, I would steer you away from Naples/Pompeii as a very long day trip to undertake when you have such an early departure the next AM. The Appian Way is a beautiful walk, and you can easily also fit in Castel Sant'Angelo, shopping, etc. The EUR is skippable as the (supposedly) fine museum there is still closed for renovation (last checked a few weeks ago). I found the When I finally relented and went to the Cappuccin Crypt I was whelmed....

Laurel,
I forgot to switch the Thursday and Friday agenda to make it an easier day before the flight home.

Looks pretty good. You should get a timed entry for the Vatican Museum, perhaps a tour that ends inside Saint Peter's Basilica.

Note that the National Museum has several sites.
If you are interested in churches, on Wednesday you might also fit in the Church of the Four Martyrs which is near San Clemente. Other churches of interest might include San Luigi dei Francesi (Caravaggio paintings), Santa Maria Sopra Minerva (very near the Pantheon), Santa Prassede (near Santa Maria Maggiore).

Looks like a lot of fun to me! Don't forget Trastevere, especially at night. Great people watching, wonderful food and a lot of fun to meander through. Check out Santa Maria in Trastevere - beautiful church on a very fun piazza.

Ostia Antica is amazing. I made the delightful mistake last year of going a bit further along unmarked paths. Made some amazing discoveries of mosaics and roof top vistas!

Castel Sant' Angelo is loaded with interesting things to see. You could probably do that and the Catacombs on the same day. You actually pass the Baths of Caracalla as your bus takes you down the Appian Way - the ruins are huge. I go there during the summer at night for the opera for a double dose of Rome at night.

The Cappuccin Crypt is a one time visit. If you have time then put it on your "been there, done that" list but I wouldn't go out of my way. Definitely skip Naples/Pompeii. Ostia Antica in some ways is as or more interesting and much less crowded.

Enjoy!!!!

Looks great except your first day (Saturday) looks jam packed. Doable but you if you're flying in from the states that'll take a lot of caffeine and determination.
I was both at the Nat'l Museum and Borghese. Definitely both worth it. Consider doing Borghese on a Sunday, the park is busier and it's great to see Romans unwind and play.
Thursday looks very open. I doubt the food tour will take all day.
Have you considered Trastevere walk ? It is quite interesting and the winding, narrow streets are a good break from the grand boulevards of Rome.
I love Naples but would be better if you had more time. We stayed in Naples 3 days and used it as a base to explore the coast and Pompeii. I loved the energy and the food was some of the best and cheapest we've had. However I say do Naples another trip, you need to savor it, not rush through.
Enjoy!

I would stay in or close to Rome for your entire trip. In Italy they have a saying: Roma, non basta una vita - For Rome, one lifetime is not enough. For the best gelato in Rome, try Old Bridge (across the street from where people line up to get into the Vatican Museum).

Thank you for all the input.
We are rearranging our itinerary according to all your comments. Friends will be with us for the week in Rome and may decide to do the (very intense) long day trip to Naples/Pompeii. My wife and I will be spending 3 weeks in Italy and will go to the Naples area after our friends leave.
Thanks again.

Re: Thursday - Food Tour, I agree with Laurel. We took the food tour in Testaccio. 10:00 until 2:00ish, lots of time after for another site. Enjoy Roma! Sherry

Trastevere and the Jewish Ghetto could be seen after your food tour.
