One way flight Rome to States - buy here or there?

Due to an emergency leaving Rome this summer, I had to buy a last minute ticket home, and round trip was the cheapest, so I books the return flight for a random date next February. I'm now trying to find a way to use the other half to go back to Italy for a month this winter, and want to know if I'd get a better price buying a one way ticket home from Rome to the states once I'm there, or should I buy any and all tickets here. Any ideas? Thanks, fellow travellers!

Sign up for fare alerts (Travelocity, etc.). See if there's a cheap flight from Rome to some other city in Europe and buy your one-way ticket leaving from there (I think Amsterdam or Dublin?), Or, buy another roundtrip ticket and go back to Italy the following year...

is it possible, in any way, for you to reschedule the unused leg (your original Rome-US flight) so that it matches your return date?

I already used my Rome to US leg of the flight, I'm trying to find a way to use the remaining leg. Is it cheaper to fly from Amsterdam or Dublin back to the States?

It appears either Amsterdam or Dublin would work, because the airlines that offer reasonable prices one-way are icelandAir and Aer Lingus. Looking at flights i mid-March, you can fly Amsterday to LAX for $671 (2 stops on the way) or Dublin to LAX on Aer Lingus for $678 (one stoop). If you fly from Rome, the best price is Turkish Airlines for $847. I'd head to Dublin and enjoy a pint of Guiness.
