I'm in the early stages of planning a trip to Italy where I'd potentially be picking up a rental car at the Rome airport and dropping it off in either Verona or Bolzano. Does anyone have an idea of what the one way drop-off charges are in Italy these days? Ballpark number is just fine.
Just plug in you dates at your favorite car rental site and see what it shows. It may be zero, or $100+ .
If it does not list a one way drop fee, check doing a return at the pick up location to see if the rate is any different.
The ballpark number I’ve paid has always been zero.
I generally use Europcar or Hertz through the consolidators linked below. However I think I returned to a different locations only with Europcar (more than once).

(Now both part of the same corporate group)
Hertz has never charged me for same country return.I do my booking here in the US before I leave, painless in Italy when they are trying to sell more insurance when you already have what you need.

I suggest that you contact the rental company or consolidator with this question. My wife and I paid $70 one way drop fee for Hertz rental in May 2016, but that's the first time I have had to pay one over 6-8 overseas rentals.
Last year we had a car reservation pick up and drop off st FCO. We changed it to pickup FCO, drop off Naples and it ended up being cheaper. So run the numbers. Look at Autoeurope.com.
We just did a Hertz rental pickup Siena, return Florence, no drop off fee but neither was an airport location. Sometimes it is a different inventory between airport cars and local cars but it should be clear when you are comparing rates.
Usually within Italy there is not a drop off cost for a one way rental.
Though only Europcar I believe has this an actual policy.
The other rental car companies likely won't charge but you would have to check for your exact dates and plans. Either way it will not be a huge amount as long as within the country.
Different locations can be more expensive due to surcharges as comparing rates at both potential drop off points is wise. Could be an airport surcharge or train station surcharge, etc... which is built into the quote.
I remember once I called Europcar while I was on my way to return my car and told them that I had changed my mind and was going to return the car at another location. The operator told me that there would be a 15€ drop off fee, which was news to me because it had never happened before. I said ok, since the fee was insignificant, but actually when I returned the car nobody charged me for anything extra, which was the norm in all other circumstances including this past summer, when I picked up at MXP and returned at FCO.
