hi, I have one night- a Sunday to spare on the road between upper Umbria and Florence (Pietralunga to be exact). Does anyone have any ideas of a quaint little town to check out- we will have an afternoon and night before we go to Florence the next morning. OR should we go a little past Florence and do an afternoon and night in Lucca? I have heard great things about Lucca. We will have been in Umbria countryside for 3 days. Thank you.
Hi Liz,
My vote would go to either Lucca or Siena. Although neither is a "quaint little town", both are fabulous. You can check them both out at a great website with 360 photos and terrific info at italyguides.it.

Liz, in 2005 we stayed a week in a villa near the little hill town of Civitella in Val di Chiana, about 1/2 way between Arezzo and Siena just off the main road. There was a B&B in town and 2 resto's (1 @ the B&B). There was a little grocery store, a few tiny piazzas, a church & a castle. There is a small museum dedicated to the British officer who liberated the town at Christmastime, when there were only women & children left--the Nazi's had rounded up and killed all the men. He diverted supply trucks of food to them when they had nothing and is their hero. The museum has photos of the town's men who were killed as well as newspaper clippings, mementos and photos of the officer who liberated the town. We loved Civitella. The folks at the grocery store recommended great restaurants in the area (Ristorante dei Lagi was one) and they were most helpful and kind.
