We will be driving between Canazei and Rovinj in July this summer, and are looking for a good place to stay to break up the drive. I'd rather not drive too far off the beaten path if at all possible, and would like to split the drive about as evenly as possible. Any recommendations would be much appreciated!

I looked at the most direct route recommended by Via Michelin. I haven't been to any of these three places but have read good things about them.
Udine (Italy)
Gorizia/Nova Gorica (Italy/Slovenia)
Trieste (Italy)
Udine and Gorizia are probably 15-20 miles off your route. Each of the proposed stops is 3-1/2 to 4 hours into the drive by VM's reckoning, usually considered to be a bit optimistic. I'm afraid I just don't recognize the names of any of the towns closer to the mid-point.

Note the drop off charge if you turn in the car outside of Italy.
