One night in Venice!

It probably sounds crazy to Venice lovers, but my husband and I will have one evening and morning in Venice before renting a car and heading to Slovenia and Croatia. I’m seeking recommendations for a spot for dinner—and maybe a cocktail beforehand if our flight is on time. We’re staying near the bus station (for transport reasons) but hope to explore Venice a little bit during our one night. We are not big meat eaters, but are flexible. Thank you for your thoughts!

So if you are staying near the bus station / Piazle Roma walk across the bridge towards the station, and then follow the signs saying “per San Marco”. You will fetch up in the Piazza, enjoy an expensive glass of prosecco and listen to the music.
For a really good meal, I would recommend Ai Mercanti. Modern Italian, the tasting menu is great.

After dining, take the No 1 vaporetto up the Grand Canal to P. Roma.

Honestly I think there are just as many Venice skeptics around but we might not be as vocal as Venice lovers. I’m glad I saw Venice once but I don’t need to go back! One night sounds like the perfect amount of time to spend there!!!

Hi Wolfster, yes, there are Venice-phobes and Venice-philes. I am one of the philes.
Venice is tough for visitors, streets full of water, transport is tricky, and costs are heavy - not surprising when everything from clean linen to beer is delivered by boat.
The main attractions, Rialto, Piazza, Doges Palace are stupidly crowded.

Dig a bit deeper, and there is a vibrant city. A guy specialising in making oars, another making forcole, the oarlocks you see on a gondola. A bloke making glass insects, anatomically correct, and exhibited in New York.

Venice does not come easily; Harry’s Bar (despite being patronised by Scott Fitzgerald and Ernie) is crap.

Behind that is real city. But not easily addressed by your average, pressed for time, tourist.

A friend who lives in Venice says “you don’t have to do anything in Venice, you just have to be there”.
