one night in Rome before flight home

We will be taking a high speed train into Rome from Florence and arriving in the later afternoon for our return trip the next morning. We are trying to decide if we should stay in central Rome that night and take a taxi to the airport in the morning, or stay closer to the airport? Any suggestions??

I asked a similar question last year. We were arriving from Chiusi on a Sunday, our flight was 10:30 Monday. The general consensus was, stay in Rome. And I am glad we did. One last afternoon and evening in Rome was wonderful. We were able to see a few more things that we missed at the beginning of our trip. We stayed near Termini and took the 1st or 2nd Leonardo Express to FCO.

I agree, stay in Rome and enjoy a final passegiatta to remember your time in Italy! I've done the same thing for the last 2 trips to Italy and loved those moments.

It also depends on the time of your flight departure, and if going to the US direct or another EU airport?

We stayed in Rome our last night and took a cab to fco for an 11am flight to London, then to the US.
Our upcoming trip in Oct we will stay at the Hilton fco the last night for a 7 am departure to Frankfurt.

Our flight is to the US, and leaves at 11 AM. I'm not sure how far ahead we need to arrive at the airport...here, at O'Hare...international flights ask you be there three hours prior, but it's crazy there!

ORDis my home airport also, and it's a piece of cake compared to FCO. You need at least 3 hours there.

If you've already spent time in Rome, you might consider Ostia for a laid-back seaside last experience.

We did that to wrap our three weeks and enjoyed the respite. It's only about 5 miles from the airport but takes up to 30 minutes depending on traffic and will cost nearly 50E each way.

It depends on how early your flight will be in the morning. For a flight before 9 am, I’d stay near the airport. We’ve done it twice. Hotel Tiber was a little more upscale. The Best Western Riviera was more economical and just a block from the beach. Both offered good, walkable nearby restaurants, low cost shuttles to & from FCO, and good, early breakfast buffets.

Edited: I just saw your flight is @ 11 am, so I guess it depends on how much time you’ve already spent in Rome & if you need to decompress before the flight home.
