One night in Milan on our way to Florence with children?

We will be traveling to Italy for the first time for two weeks this summer with our two children, ages 7 and 9. We are flying in and and out of Zurich, but spending 5 nights in Florence and 5 nights in Malcesine (I have a whole set of questions about the Malcesine leg of our trip, but I'll save those for another post). Our plan right now is to get right on the train in Zurich when we land (late morning) and make our way to Italy, spending the night in Milan before traveling to Florence the next day. We aren't set on Milan, but it seems like a good mid point - it looks to be about four hours by train from Zurich, and only 2 hours or so from Florence.

I am wondering first of all if this makes sense, or if there is another place that might be better for a family with kids to stay for the night, either in Italy or in southern Switzerland. I'm also hoping for hotel recommendations where we can either fit all four of us in one room (which seems very rare, from what I've seen in my initial research) or where we can easily get adjoining rooms without spending a huge amount of money. In Florence and Malcesine we will be staying in apartments or houses through Homeaway, so this will be one of only two nights we stay in a hotel during the trip (the other will be the night before we go home, which we'll probably spend in Zurich).

Thanks so much - this will be our first European trip with our children (and only our second to Europe ourselves), so any and all advice/recommendations are greatly appreciated!

Hello, I'm just a newbie here but I'll visit Italy with my family (party of four with kids 3 and 8 years old) for the first time. We arrived to Milano Malpensa Airport after noon and we'll star just for a night there (at Ostello Bello Grande hostel). It really looks great. We booked a room with four bunk beds and private bathroom for 45 euros each including welcome drinks (juice for the kids), dinner and breakfast. Close to Milano Centrale and just 3 stops from the Duomo and other sights.

I think kids this age would find wandering around on the roof of the Cathedral of Milan quite memorable. I am not a big fan of Milan but the Cathedral is amazing and something very impressive for kids this age.

My seven year old loved the top of the Duomo, the spires amazed her.

There is also the Museum of Science & Technolgy site here that is supposed to have a very good hands on section for children. We ran out of time and weren't able to go but you might want to look at it. I liked Milan and hope to return someday. The roof of the Duomo is phenomenal but, of course, weather-dependent.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions! I am looking forward to our night in Milan. I'm going to try to secure tickets to see the Last Supper the day we get there (it looks like tickets are free on the first Sunday of the month, which that will be), though I know it's a long shot, and we will definitely see the Duomo.

The only time we will spend in Switzerland is our last night, which we still need to plan. We are only flying in and out of Zurich because it that was the most affordable flight we found. Of course we would love to visit Switzerland as well, but to really see it we will have to wait for another trip.

We leave our rental in Malcesine on Thursday and fly out of Zurich on Friday evening. The only unknown at this point is that day/night - whether to to straight to Zurich Thursday morning and spend 24 hours there, or whether to stop in a different town in Switzerland (possibly Lucerne) for the night and make our way to Zurich Friday morning. We were thinking about taking the Bernian Express train through the Alps, but we're leaning toward a more direct route to Zurich so that we don't have to worry about getting to the airport in time for our flight.

I'd stop in Milan for a couple hours. We stopped in Milan between trains from Rome to Luzern Switzerland for couple hours. Agree wtih poster above about taking the kids to the top of the Duomo in Milan. You can store your luggage in Milano Centrele train station, then take the subway down 2 stops to the Duomo. Real easy. next to the Duomo is rooftop food galleria that made for a nice quick lunch for us. They had sevearl to choose from and tables overlooking the church. We ate here - http://obica.com/portal/IT/en/dove-siamo/milan/duomo/

When you are done touring take the subway back to the station to catch your train. You can get trains to Florence every hour. You can be in Florence in the evening to check in to your hotel.
