One Night between Rome & Venice

We have our Itinerary just about nailed down. For reasons that can't be changed. We will have one night to spend between Rome & Venice. (I wanted 2 nights but, it's not going to work out). Trying to pick a place that won't make it too difficult from the train to hotel & back again. Here's one thing.....I AM going to see the Tower of Pisa since this is my 2nd trip to Italy and I did not get to see it the last time. I know there's not much else to do there, but I'm seeing it! That being said, where should we spend our one night before heading to Venice? Siena is out because it will be July 2nd that we are doing this and it is the Palio. Bologna? Been to Florence, don't care to go back. Who's got a favorite little spot that we can spend the night at? Thanks, can't wait to hear your ideas.

Lucca? Pisa could be a half-day trip.

When are you going to Pisa?
Pisa is only one hour west of Florence by train. Between Roma and Venice, south to north, you must pass through Florence.
I know you've been in Florence already, but that's an easy stop along the way by train. Spend 1 or 2 nights in Florence, and while staying in Florence do a half day trip to Pisa to see the leaning tower. Bologna is another easy stop between Rome and Venice (the train between Rome and Venice stops in Florence and Bologna). However from Bologna to Pisa it's a longer trip, you have to back track to Florence and go to Pisa from Florence. So why not stay in Florence for the night? At least you don't have to deal with the Pisani people in the evenings. Half a day is bad enough.

If I'm reading you right, you're leaving Rome, heading to Pisa to see the tower and then want to spend a night before heading to Venice. Is that it? Lucca. Not far from Pisa, and on the way to Florence where you can change to a fast train to Venice. Beautiful walled city with a traffic free interior, ancient Roman amphitheater that is now a piazza, birth place of Puccini, and Green Bay's sister city, the toilet paper machinery capital of Europe.
