One more question...

So yes, we are traveling over the New Year Holiday to Italy with our 7 year old. We will have 6 nights. Should we just stay in Rome for the entire time or should we consider heading up to Florence for a couple of days? Given that time of year, I was not sure of many day trips from Rome to take or if we would be missing out not seeing one other area. As always, thoughts are appreciated!

If your flight to Rome arrives early enough in the day, going directly to Florence for 2 nights and then returning to Rome for the rest might work, to give you some variety.

Otherwise, Rome will keep you well occupied. With the short daylight hours and winter temps., being out after dark will be much less appealing than it is in Summer. This will somewhat limit your touring time

Six nights gives you five full days. You really don't have time for a second city. With the holidays to consider I would spend the entire 5 days in Rome. You'll have plenty to see and do without trying to cram another city into the mix.

Really depends what you want to do and see, 5 days would be far too much Rome for me personally. Everyone is different. I prefer Florence.

Hi Alyssa -
As Donna mentioned, you really only have 5 full days to work with and tons to see in Rome so I'd stay put. You can always take a day trip to see another area if the spirit moves you?

With a small child along, I'm thinking that settling in for all 6 nights will be easier than moving cities/hotels. You'll also be working with a day (Jan 1) when many attractions are closed so the flexibility to arrange your days around that might be nice.

If you want to see another place..go ahead...you must be young and energetic with a 7 year old....even one night in Florence would be a taste of another city...just because there is a lot to see in Rome does not mean that you have to see it and only it...most tourists see the Rome highlights in 3 full days...

If you have 6 nights.....head to Florence from Rome on the first day...high speed train easy...2 nights
return to Rome 4 nights

OR.....Rome first 3 nights
early high speed train to Florence...full day and 1 night...return to Rome late afternoon early evening
2 nights in Rome...fly home...
if flying in out of same city...I like to take a break and see it again for a day or so before I fly out...gives me a different perspective...

Thanks everyone! I think we are going to take it slow and stay in Rome for the duration. While our son has travelled with us before this is his first European adventure and we want to make sure stress is at a minimum...but anything can change I suppose ;)
