One month is Sicily, where to stay, how to travel

We are active senior citizens who like to have a home base and travel, either by car or by train or bus to deeply amerce ourselves into the history and beauty of an area. This would be our 4th trip to Italy, first to Sicily.
We are looking for a good home base from which to start our daily excursions. It the past, we have used both AirBNB and VRBO, for both city stays and places in the countryside. We may be traveling with just the two of us but are actually looking for some friends who have the time and wherewithal to join us.
In the past we have rented a car and also used public transport when it was easier. When we spent a month outside Sorrento, we hardly took the car out of the driveway because the bus/train was so convenient and inexpensive. But when we were in Tuscany, we drove everywhere. We are older now and like to avoid city driving. Frankly, I’m not even sure how to get there from here (east coast US)!
As for lodging my husband hates stairs these days. Ground floor, or elevators are in his must have category now. Beach would be great. Outside space is a plus. I’m a blogger so internet is important. Will need a washer and a kitchen.
Any help would be appreciated. We are very early in the planning stages. Thanks in advance

Lucky you!
I would just dive in to an accommodation search. Because you don't have a specific area of the island in mind--and there is no one area that will give you access to everything (I'd look at it as four quadrants), finding a great apartment may be the inspiration.

Are you looking for one base or two? Sicily is big. I tend to not travel with minimal bases and do many day trips, but if I did, for Sicily, I'd pick two bases, Siracusa and Palermo. There are many day trip options on public transportation for those cities.
