My wife and I will be on a cruise that stops for one day in Naples towards the end of January. Rather than take one or their tours, we're going to grab a cab and head for Sorrento for the day. Obviiously we won't have a lot of time, but want to find a great restaurant for lunch. Suggestions?
I would not take a cab to Sorrento. If you have the day, take the ferry across the Naples Bay. If you prefer a vehicle, I recommend using Ugo at http://www.sorrentocars.com/ for a car pickup, you could also arrange for a return to the cruise ship. As far as restaurants go, I recommend the Red Lion [Il Leone Rosso] on Via Marziale, 25. An added benefit is that is is within a stone's throw of the rail line if you decide to take the train to Sorrento. Their website is in Italian but if you google Red Lion and Sorrento, you'll get reviews and descriptions. Good luck on your trip!

Thanks Darrell, I wasn't totally locked in to a taxi, so the ferry and Ugo are good suggestions too. Will look into them.

Right in the Sorrento Marina is Bagni Delfino, a wonderful seafood restaurant. Book a reservation to guarantee you’ll get a table. We ate there several times, every bite was fresh and delicious. A reason for us to return to Sorrento.
In a vacuum, the old port in Sorrento is an ideal place for a meal, and all the restaurants seem to have their followers. However, I wouldn’t go through all this effort to go to Sorrento, especially in the off season. There’s just not much there to justify a quick visit, and I have no idea how open the restaurants would be. Naples has tons to offer. If you’re not interested in an organized tour, the “tourist center” and Spaccanapoli are great to explore on foot. Are you going to pass up on an authentic Neopolitan pizza?
Thanks everyone. I will take your advise and counsel into consideration. It does seem like a lot of hassle for a quick trip. Ristorante Delfino is the plan if we go.
