ROME - Italian news reports say that part of the ceiling of Nero's Golden Palace in Rome has collapsed.
There were no early reports of injured people after the collapse Tuesday morning, according to the ANSA and Apcom news agencies.
Built by Roman emperor Nero in the first century A.D., the sumptuous palace is known to many by its Latin name Domus Aurea. The monument has been plagued by structural problems and humidity that threaten its frescoed halls.
It reopened in June 1999 following 18 years of closure due to worries about structural soundness. It has since become one of the capital's most popular tourist draws.
Hmmm, this has been closed for years now, so hopefully no one was inside when it happened :)
I last visited in the Summer of 2008, and was greatly disappointed by the lack of anything to actually see. I had visited before 2008 and thought it was quite nice. However, after my last visit we decided that it wasn't worth the entrance fee because there just anything to see. The female gate attendants and one of the guides was quite rude also on my last visit.
Norm,
I saw video of the Palace incident on the news this morning. Thankfully, it doesn't appear that anyone was hurt.
I believe the news that I saw the report was CBC Newsworld. I'll watch Telegiornale 24 on TLN later today to see if there's any mention of it.
Cheers!
