One Last Night in Rome

Our schedule is as follows; 3 nights Rome, 3 nights Florence, 3 nights Cinque Terre, 3 nights Tuscany.. All of that is already set.. From Tuscany, we will train to Rome for our last night before a 10:00 am flight home.. Our debate is, stay in Rome one last night then catch the express train to FCO in the morning (the website says they start running at 5:30 am).. Or get a hotel near the airport and just exhale after a busy 2 weeks...

Would love to hear thoughts and experiences....

Thanks, Jimmy

I would always vote for one last night in Rome itself...then a prebooked driver to get you to the airport with no stress for about 50 Euro. You can exhale in the car and know you made the most of every day. And I promise there will be something else you really want to see in Rome!

What Ruth said. Stay in the Centro Storico, walk the small back streets, have a lovely dinner at an outdoor trattoria. More memories than a sterile airport hotel. The 50 Euro cab is a bargain.

I'd suggest just staying in one of the many hotels across from the Rome Termini and taking the train out there.
Thankfully you have a normal departure time--not like all those poor people that get talked into a 6:00 a.m. flight to another European gateway airport where they'll sit around until mid day to fly out.

Stay central Rome as others have said. Believe me, it will be a case of wanting to squeeze every last drop, rather than taking time to exhale. My sister is there next month so yes, I'm already jealous.

I suppose it depends when you will be arriving in Rome.

If you plan to get there early enough in the day to do something, then stay in Rome.

If its just in time to go to bed, I would pick the airport area and get a bit more sleep in the morning before a long travel day

Stay in Centro Storico and relish every last minute....taxi to airport...sleep on the plane.

Centro Storico, then taxi to airport.

Don't forget to toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain.

Our last night in Rome, at the end of a two week trip, we had an amazing Lazio dinner with wife discovering Al Amatricana, a favorite pasta sauce and us sharing a great bottle of wine. You can low stress in Rome with more charm than the airport area. You can low stress tour a last night anywhere better than near the airport. It's about getting the most out of your days.

Amatriciana? Discovered that at Da Giggetto in the Jewish Ghetto (across the river from Trastevere) in 2010.

Our last trip this past March, I discovered Spaghetti alla Carbonara at Emma Pizzeria, near Campo de' Fiori. Bits of guanciale (pork cheek), olive oil, African pepper and Pecorino Romano cheese.

Those are the best pasta dishes I've had in Italy, maybe the best ever, period.
