We will have been staying for 3 nights in Montepulciano and have the ability to stay one extra night somewhere else before we drive to Rome for one night to leave the next day for home. Since we will have had some time to explore that area, wondering where would be a good place to go and stay for the extra night. Not sure if Siena or Chianti are would be too far? Perhaps Cortona? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as we will be there the end of August early September so don't have much time to book another place. Thanks in advance!
Orvieto is right on the way to Rome
You could also drop the car there if you use Hertz and train into Rome
Or do 2 nights in Rome unless you’ve already been there on this trip
Siena, though 100% worth a visit, would be back tracking slightly, and you'd need to stay somewhere with parking? Might be easier to just stay at your accommodations in Montepulciano an extra night if you can extend, and just day trip.
Orvieto could be another option, as it would be on your way south towards Rome, and a great place to spend a day. Still have to deal with parking but the parking lots at the base of the funicular are free for cars.
We can't extend out stay in our accommodations, as they are booked, so wherever we go, will spend the night. One thought was to drive to Florence and drop off our car there to spend the day and overnight, then train to Rome...have been to Florence before, but not on this trip. One of my favorite places, I must say, though have not been there in the busy season.
I like your Florence idea. The train ride is enjoyable and you get to spend a day in a favorite city.
Siena.. Check out Villa Del Sole, stayed there in May can't recommend it enough.
Thanks for all the suggestions..another thought was to drive through the Chianti region on the way to Florence and spend the night somewhere in that area...any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated!
