If your budget isn't too tight, I would suggest the Villa San Michele in Fiesole. Great fine dining. Part of the restaurant is on an open balcony (with ceiling overhead) with breathtaking views of Florence. Here's the website. http://www.villasanmichele.com/web/ovil/villa_san_michele.jsp. Here's a second link that shows the open restaurant area. http://www.villasanmichele.com/web/ovil/villa_san_michele_restaurant.jsp. We have an acquaintance that was married there and for our 2007 trip to Florence, we planned to have lunch there. It's not cheap (we were warned). Bring lots of Euros.

Also in Fiesole, there is the "Trattoria Le Cave Di Maiano". The food is wonderful ($$$) with a vine covered terrace and a mountain view of Florence below and the Castel above. Take the #7 bus to Fiesole and then a taxi to the restaurant. There is another restaurant along the route with a similar, and deceptive, name so make certain that you arrive at the correct destination.

La Chiusa, in Montefollonico. Though we had dinner there, and ate inside, there were areas outside with tables, so I'm guessing they sit outside when the weather's appropriate (you'd want to check on this). Beautiful setting, fabulous meal.

Susan: Great question. The answer is easy. La Ristoro Di Lamole. They have a website and you can make reservations via email. The Sunday afternoon supper is not to be missed. A beautiful patio overlooking vast Chianti vineyards. The restaurant is in the tiny hilltop village of Lamole (near Greve between Florence and Siena). Wonderful food and the local Lamole di Lamole chianti is so very nice. Have fun.
