one day side trip from Orvieto using public transit only

Looking for ideas for a one day side trip from Orvieto, using public transit only, returning to Orvieto to sleep. I'll be travelling solo in mid May, and will be continuing to Rome following several days in Orvieto. I already have plans to visit Civita. Assisi and Cortona would appear to be possibilities - but I'd appreciate any other suggestions. Just looking to stroll about, soak up some sights and have a good look around.

Everything you could possibly need or want to know about that is right here: Ron in Rome on Orvieto He's one of the most amazing sources of info I've found on travel in Italy. Be sure to check out his other postings.

Thanks Michael, I'm very familiar with roninrome but didn't realize he had a section on Orvieto! Thanks again!

BTW, Orvieto is awesome. Here are some pictures and a few video clips that I took during our time in Orvieto in May 2011. And since you mentioned Assisi, here are some photos from our trip to Assisi in May 2008. We really loved it, but wished we had stayed in the center of town, instead of on the periphery. Happy travels.

now that I've had a chance to look at the Ron in Rome site, it doesn't really answer my question. I am looking for day trip ideas leaving from Orvieto, not to Orvieto. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd be happy to hear them!

As you indicated, Cortona is a possibility. Also, Spoleto and Siena. Siena is a bit longer of a train ride, however, it's a great town to visit.

Sorry about that, Kathleen. I didn't read your posting closely enough.

Since you are considering it, if you aren't going to Cortona otherwise, then I would highly recommend it as a day trip. It's a really quick shot from Orvieto via train. Otherwise, Assisi can be a solid option if you are looking for more "sites" to see, which it has plenty of. Just keep in mind, unless there is a bus, which there may be, it will take 2-2.5 hours to get there via train though (which is still doable, if you want). But if you're into wine, another nearby quick day trip I would recommend is Montepulciano (quick train, then quick bus). If you're into Etruscan relics, then another nearby stop I'd recommend is Chiusi (which can be mixed into a nice full day with Montepulciano if you'd like, a half day in each). Or if you like quaint, unique small Tuscan towns, you can even mix in Pienza with Montepulciano instead. But you've really got a lot of options from Orvieto. Viterbo can even be worth a day trip if you'd like to explore more of the Lazio region (and you are doing more of Umbria/Tuscany later). Whichever you choose, enjoy your travels!
