If we only have one day to see Pompeii from Rome what is the easiest way to get there without renting a car? I have heard some awful things about the bus tours. Are there any good ones?
think about Herculaneum; you get there via the same set of trains, and IMHO its a better site than Pompeii.
Take the fast train from Rome to Naples. Change to the circumvesuviana train (located in the basement) heading to Sorrento. This will take you to both the Ercolano (Herculaneum) stop and then onto the Pompeii scavi stop. This is the easiest way to get to Pompeii. You will be able to pick up a guide right at the site.

How long would this journey take, from Rome to Pompeii?
kim,
From Rome to Naples is anywhere from 1h35m to 3h
the cost is around E18,00 or $25.00.
From Naples to Herculaneum about 15min.on the Circumvesuvian at a cost of E3,10 each way.
From there to Pompeii another 35 min. If you also plan on Vesuvius, there is a bus that takes you up to the volcano, for E6,oo.
Plan on doing Vesuvius first,as it closes around 4pm
I prefere Herc. as it is much more entact.
I agree with the first post. It is very easy to catch the Eurostar from Rome. Just be sure you don't get on a regular train, as it will stop at every town. When you get to the Naples train station, you go downstairs to catch the circumvesuviana. I think it is easier to get off at the stop near the main church. I think it says "santuria". Just ask a local. It is very near the main entrance.
