We will have one (short) day in Sicily on our NCL cruise this July. We dock in Messina. This stop is after 4 full touring days with two teenage boys, so we are hoping to have a relaxing beach day in Sicily. I expect we will try to find a taxi from the port and would love to either find a beach spot that has a local vibe, or take a taxi to an historical site or town first, and then a nearby beach after. I realize we may be sacrificing some must-see's, but I have to pick my battles. Would love some recommendations as I have never been to Sicily. Thanks!

You could take a one hour train ride train to Taormina, a lovely town with a stunning Greek theatre and views of Mt. Etna. There is a whole area of beaches between Taormina and Naxos. Check the Trenitalia website for info on train schedule.

From Messina port, take a taxi to Torre Faro, on the Capo Peloro peninsula.
