We are going on a cruise in about week that leaves from Rome and we will have one day in Scicily. I think cruise tours are probably over rated and bring you to do lots of shopping. Can someone recommend a day trip from the port?

I expect that there are lots of folks who will jump in to give you tips. They might ask you to specify the port, just to make sure that they give you the best relevant info

Joanne, the best place to get info on your cruise stops is on Cruise Critic.com. Just type in Messina, and read people's comments, about the tours offered by the cuise line, and the options you have for a one day stop, etc. You can go to Taormina for the views and shopping(great deals on Valverde shoes) , and /or and take trip to the volcano, whcih can be can really exciting; especially if it is active, and not shrouded in clouds.

Messina is one place where you should take the cruise tours because the transport isn't the best and you want to be sure to return to the ship on time. You could see Messina, Taormina or Etna.
