One Day In Rome - Tour/Guide Recommendation

I have never been to Rome and may never return so I would like a great 1 day tour with a guide. In June I will be in Rome for 1 1/2 days. On my full day I would like a really great all day tour. It can be private or group. Can anyone give a recommendation? If it helps; I don't want to spend all of my time visiting museums. I just want to see as many of the great tourist attractions that I can.

I know some people tour Rome on their own, but I have a horrible sense of direction. I will be with 3 other ladies. I don't know what they want to see or are capable of seeing; 2 have mobility issues. I'm only looking for a tour for me; if they decide to participate great, if not we can meet later for dinner.

Thank you for any guidance you can give!

On many Rick Steves tours, a local guide named Francesca Caruso is used and she is terrific! She may be expensive and very busy, but I notice that she lists recommended colleagues on her website: https://francescacaruso.com/

Renee and Lin C; I want to thank you both so much!!!

This gives me a great starting point. I'm looking forward to this experience, but was so stressed by having no plan. My travel companions have given little to no input on what they would like to do or how to go about sightseeing.

Again thank you both for your input!

Hi Samantha, What I would be concerned about is tailoring it to what YOU want to do, so the more you watch and read about Rome, the more input you'd have! For example, if you love churches tell your tour guide. How about art, not in museums but inside churches? Hope you're staying right in the ancient center so it's easy to get around?

Here's Rome with lots of topics for you to review -

And a short clip with Rick & Francesca, mentioned above by another poster . I've seen numerous videos with her in Rome, she knows the city well. https://www.ricksteves.com/watch-read-listen/video/rome-passeggiata. I also really liked Rick's focus here for you to see the ancient city - https://www.ricksteves.com/watch-read-listen/read/articles/ancient-rome-the-things-that-were-caesars.

You mentioned dinner, ask your hotel for suggestions. Good luck!

Hi Sandancisco - Thank you for your reply. I guess I was looking at the scenario a little differently. My plan was to see what the tour/guide offered and then decide if it's what I want to do. If I'm with a group tour I will not be able to customize; if, however, it's private I can have more input. I am open to either option.

Thanks for the RS links! Rome is an amazing city; with so much to see, it's difficult to know where to start. I wish I had at least 3 days, but I have to work with what I have.....lol I will be staying near the city center. I'm not concerned about dinner. I was just saying I will be able to meet them later if they decide to do something different.

Hi Jeff - Thank you for your recommendation.

Everyone has been so helpful; you people are the BEST!!

Colosseum is by far the #1 attraction in Rome - BUT - Much of the best of it, including Palatine Hill and Fori, can be seen from outside without a ticket if you have the right vantage points. If I were you, I wouldn't waste a day trying to get Colosseum tickets, and likewise I'd avoid any attractions which involve waiting in a queue for long periods (even with skip-the-line tickets).

A hop-on-hop-off bus tour is a really good way to just see as many attractions as possible with a good deal of flexibility; it's particularly great if you're exhausted, have limited time, or are travelling people with mobility issues.

I agree, you can ask your tour guide to show you the views of the Colosseum & the Forum without going inside. Walking through the ancient center with a guide, rather than a bus, would be best!
