One Day in Northern Italy... where to go

My family and I are traveling from Lauterbrunnen Switzerland to Nice, France, and have one day/night to spend in between in Italy - where should we go?

Kids are ages 19 - 13

Is your train routing through Italy or France? Some routes are via MIlan and Genoa, others through Geneva and Lyon. If you are route through Italy, both Milan and Genoa can make a decent one night stop. Milan is probably a better bet after dark than Genoa, though.

Are you taking the train to Nice?

Lauterbrunnen to Nice is about 10-12 hours on the train...I personally do not like Milan, if you were going to stop somewhere maybe Genoa.

If routing through Milan, you can have a perfectly wonderful day right in Milan. Duomo with rooftop, maybe Brera museum or La Scala tour, Galleria Vittorio Emmanuel 2, a nice risotto or cotoletta, some gelato. People watching. Fancy shopping.

I don't know nothing about kids, but if they aren't impressed by the view from the top of the Duomo on a clear day, I don't want to know em.

Milan has the Last Supper, The Cathedral ( Duomo) and the Galleria

For a one day/night stop that does not take you off your route, suggest this for your consideration.

If any of your teens are girls, I am sure they and their mother will enjoy the Galleria! (bye bye $$$ ) :-)

Are you traveling by car or train? You could spend a night on one of the beautiful Italian Lakes.
