Marilynne, exactly where in the "old area" are you staying? We have been to Genova many times as we have relatives there. They all tell us to stay away from the Port area at night. Very dangerous. During the day I guess it's safe enough. Genova is not a tourist's city but it does have it's charms if you take it for what ita busy old port city. Piazza Ferrari is the city center with a big fountain in the middle. A few blocks away from it is one of my favorite areas, Cannettolungo. This is a neighborhood of very, very narrow streets with fruit stands, butcher shops, etc. and is very unique. It is one of the the old parts of Genova. There are some museums in Genova but expect famous paintings. There is an Aquarium but I don't go to Italy to see aquariums. Along the Corso Italia there is a beautiful promenade and views of the sea. There is a little area called Boccadasse that is an old fishing neighborhood with colorful boats and some good seafood restaurants. Mainly you should eat pesto and focaccia when in Genova as it is the birthplace of these foods. Excellent cuisine. I hope you enjoy your one day. Let me know if you have more questions.
