One day in April (4/15). Modena? Parma? Bologna? Other?

4/16 is a full day food tour around Bologna, but what are must see/dos for 4/15?
Two adults. We have a car, but are happy to take the train if better. Thanks.
We have not booked a place to stay for either night. Thanks so much.

I’ve visited both Bologna and Parma. Bologna is okay but I’ve made my one and only visit there. Parma, on the other hand, is one of my favorite cities in northern Italy. To me, it’s just a nicer city. Easy to navigate through the old part of the city with a very good museum housing the National Gallery, the Teatro Farnese, beautiful cathedral and baptistry. Oh yeah! Parmigiano Reggiano cheese and Prosciutto de Parma! If you overnight in Parma, you could easily take the train to Bologna for your food tour. For a great dining experience in Parma, visit Trattoria del Tribunale Vicolo Politi 5.

I haven’t been to any of these cities, but I did spend an overnight in Ferrara many years ago. We ended up there by accident on a trip to Venice. I thought it was a beautiful city and had a really fun evening. It was also during the annual Palio of St George which probably added to the fun.

I've been to all of them many times since I live half of the year in the province of Modena. I'd spend the day in Bologna. Travel the porticoes to San Luca, go to Piazza Maggiore and into the church there to see the meridian line. Visit the Basilica of San Domenica to see work by Michelangelo. Wander the gritty streets near the oldest university in the Western world. Take a look at all the remaining gates of the city. Now, with Parma and Modena I would choose Parma. Although if you are interested in the Enzo Ferrari house that is in Modena. The food is great in Emilia Romagna... I don't think you will be disappointed.
