Even though we have 2 nights booked at the hostel in Sorrento, I figure we really have only 1 full day to spend. Would it be possible to fit a half-day visit to Pompeii alongside a bus tour (maybe even ferry back) to Positano/Amalfi? If so, would it be better to go Pompeii in the morning, Amalfi in the afternoon/evening, or, the other way around?

I agree with Donna. If you look at your map you will see that these areas are not next to each other.
I'd pick one and enjoy that.

Honestly, I think you're trying to cram too much into such a short time. Is it possible to see the amalfi coast on your half day and do a full day at Pompeii or the other way around? Both activities are full day activities and putting them together really is not realistic. If you can do one on the arrival day and the other on your full day you'll be a lot happier and not so rushed.

I agree with Donna & Sally, but if you're determined to do both things in one day, start with Pompeii. And be there when it opens, which I believe is 8:30 (from my 3-year-old visitors guide).
