One Day Cruise Port in Naples - August 2026 - Virgin Voyages

Arriving in Naples in late August on a Virgin Voyages. Have never been to Italy and want to see everything. Knowing that it's not possible on this trip, I want to definitely hit the highlights. Knowing that it's probably the worst time of year to hit the Amalfi Coast, it's better than being at home! :)

Here are my options I'm struggling with:
1. Hiring a private driver through ww.lovelyamalfitours.com. Very highly rated and I have a good quote for Ravello / Herculaneum. They can also personalize tours. A/C in Mercedes and back to ship guarantee.

  1. A motorboat tour through Virgin. Bus ride to Salerno to pick up a boat to Positano with free time, then to Amalfi and back to Naples.

  2. Spend the day on Capri.

I WANT TO DO THEM ALL!!!!! I'm calling this my "next trip preview" trip. Any and all help appreciated!

Interesting that you didn’t mention what was the absolute highlight for me which is Pompeii.

Driving along the Amalfi Coast is likely to involve a lot of traffic and traffic slowdowns. Parking is also problematic.

I think you need to choose 1 thing that is the most important to you and focus on it. Come back to Naples on a land journey and enjoy the rest of your interests.

So you have one single day in Naples in late August, from maybe 9a-6p??

Honestly; knowing that Amalfi traffic will be really bad, pick whatever ship-based Virgin tour appeals to you . I might suggest, for lots of reasons, to do some ferry-based option. If that's Capri, awesome.

Naples is gonna be hot, Pompeii/Herculaneum is gonna be super hot so pace yourself, hydrate and wear cool, sun-shading attire. And if people are a bit short-tempered and crowds impact your experience, please don't draw broad conclusions about the people or the various places from this one trip.

Our first trip to Italy was a cruise in 2014 and we also had a stop in Naples. I wanted to see Pompeii and my wife wanted to see the Amalfi Coast. So we booked a tour that did both and we ended up being so rushed we saw very little and made it back to the ship with 30 minutes to spare. However thanks to that visit, it was our dream to go back for a longer stay and in April 2023 we spent 2 weeks in Sorrento. On one of those days we booked a small group tour along the Amalfi Coast from Sorrento and 4.5 hours of our 9 hour tour was in a car. You just can't avoid traffic.

The moral to my story is that nothing moves quickly in that region and August will be worse. My advice is to pick one thing and immerse yourself. Personally I'd pick Herculaneum with my 2nd choice being Capri which we enjoyed far more than the Amalfi Coast. So much so that it's on the list for a multi day stay sometime in the future.

The tour offered by Virgin is likely your safest choice
At least you are out on the sea with fresh air and not plugging along in sweltering heat and traffic
