One afternoon and night in Venice

I know, it is not enough time. But after a two week trip driving in Tuscany and Dolomites, my 21 year old daughter and I are flying out of Marco Polo. Originally, we were just going to stay outside the airport for our last night returning our rental to Alamo at the airport. I’m now considering arriving around noon, returning the car in Mestre and spending the afternoon and night in Venice proper. I know about the Jubilee and potential crowds, but wonder if it is worth it to venture there and best way to go about it, willing too spend $300 for a nice hotel especially if it helps arrange transport to the airport the next day (flight leaves at 1:40 pm). I’ve seen Cannaregio recommended as more off the beaten path and less crowded. I would love ideas of the easiest and fastest way to get from Mestre to a recommended location in Venice, where to stay, what to enjoy to take away some memories, but not just be a stressful venture.

You don't say what time of year, and is your flight direct back to North America? Do you want a private water taxi to the airport? That will run about 150 EUR.

The Alamo rental car is located at Mestre station, so there are frequent trains to Venezia Santa Lucia station, which happens to be in Cannaregio. Get a hotel walking distance from there. Take a look at the hotel Continental. It has a dock on the Grand Canal where the water taxi can pick you up, and might be in your price range depending on day of the week and time of year.

We like the Hotel Ai Mori D'Oriente in Cannaregio. It's an easy walk from Santa Lucia train station. It's also an easy walk to the Alilaguna, which is the water transport to the airport, (Madonna d'Orta stop.)
The vaporetto stop on the Grand Canal is the other direction, another ten minute walk.
Just walk and wander, ride the vaporetto on the Grand Canal at night, and have aperitifs canal-side at the hotel.
Enjoy!

Thank you! I forgot to clarify the date. This will be late June, and yes, the flight is direct Venice to Dallas.
