On the ground in Italy - 2

We've been to Milano, Ravenna, and now in Padova.

1) We have had problems with getting on the internet. I brought my mobile hot-spot device, and this is what I am on now

2) Keep your passport handy (not in your moneybelt) on the train. They may want to see it.

3) Trains run on time. You get about 2 min to get on. Don't be late to the station.

4) I have seen no sign of pickpockets. Now, the observant reader will note that a pickpocket that you can notice is a very unskilled pickpocket. At Milano Duomo square, there were a lot of cops. At Milano airport, nothing obvious. The most blatant case was some woman in Ravenna asking for money in the railway station.

5) APERTIVO TIME!!!!! This is such a fun thing. In Italy, between 6-7 PM, many bars do Apertivo. It's a cocktail hour, of course. The main thing is the Aperol spritz - Aperol is a cordial with an orange flavor - the spritz is a fizzy water. Also Campari spritz. These are often served with a little snacky snack, usually potato chips and sometimes olives, but some places do a little pizza.

6) In mid-September, NOTHING is crowded. We did not try to walk up to the "Last Supper" and get in. But here in Padua, we could have walked up and gotten immediately into the Scrovegni Cappella. Railway stations and some piazzas have been crowded. But not many lines here during Shoulder Season.

Sounds like you are having a great time!

Could you give us more information on your mobile hotspot? I took a Skyroam Solis to Italy this past summer, and had an enormous amount of trouble with it (even though it was my third time using the Solis on a trip to Europe). I would love an alternative that is more reliable. Thank you in advance!

I hope you’re having a wonderful time! I’m glad you were able to stay overnight in Ravenna. Which other cities will you be seeing?

I went to Italy twice this year in June and just returned from a second trip. I visited twenty cities - making up for 2020/2021. : )
1) I didn’t have problems with the internet, but I only tried to access it at my lodging.
2) “Keep your passport handy (not in your moneybelt) on the train. They may want to see it.” I am really curious about this comment! I rode a lot of trains, including the routes you were on, and I was never asked for my passport. I bought almost all of my tickets on-line & printed at home. (I always keep my passport in my money belt.). Were they checking your passport in general, or were they confirming you matched the name on the ticket?
3) Agree, most of the trains were running much better this Summer!
4) “I have seen no sign of pickpockets.” My adult daughter experienced one during our last metro ride last week in Rome. Since she had everything valuable safely in her money belt, it was just another “travel story”, thankfully!
5) “ APERTIVO TIME!!!!! This is such a fun thing. In Italy, between 6-7 PM, many bars do Apertivo. It's a cocktail hour, of course. Sometimes it was enough of a snack, plus an earlier gelato, to consider it a substitute for dinner. We also had a few different flavors, depending on the region.

The spritz part of an Aperol or Campari Spritz is Prosecco fizzy wine, topped with fizzy water. It's not a spritz without the wine—or, at least, it's a bad spritz.

Aperol is not orange flavour….it’s made from rhubarb!
Just looks like orange…..and just as delicious!

Our trip is Milano (3 N), Ravenna (2 N), Padua (2 N, we just finished N1), Torino (5 N), Pisa (2N), Siena (2N), Firenza (4N and home). We are here primarily for the Salona del Gusto, a slow food festival in Torino. We meet friends for that.

We are enjoying ourselves, yes.

The portable router is from T-Mobile. Works in the hotel, worked on the train. Uses the same power connection as the cell phone. It is not fast - things seem to creep along, but you can connect in situations with no obvious open network.

I just want to say, as someone who lived in Brookings, SD for several years, I love your user name. :)

We rode the regional train this past Saturday roundtrip Venice to Padua. Sunday we did a day trip to Treviso from Venice. Also a regional train. No one ever came by our seats and asked us for our tickets let alone our passports.

Paul. Don’t let negative feedback in. Thanks for your current experience. No one should be is interested two years ago or one year ago.
Times change quickly these days

Enjoy your experience and safe travels.
