My husband and I plan to travel by train from CT to Florence next month. Depending on time, we may want to see Lucca. Is it possible to get off in Lucca and back on a couple of hours later without a train ticket to Lucca?
You could, under certain circumstances, if Lucca was a stop on the way to Florence from the CT. But, it's not. You will need to buy your tickets from the CT to Lucca and a second set from Lucca to Florence. All trains on both runs will be regional trains. No seat reservations permitted. Once you validate the ticket from the CT to Lucca, it's good for 6 hours. Hold on to your second set of tickets to Florence and validate those when you depart Lucca. All will work fine if you have the time.
Lucca is a very nice little town. We stayed two nights there. If you go there, to get into Lucca you: arrive at the train station and follow the crowd. When you get in front of the train station, put the train station to your back. In front of you is the wall that surrounds Lucca. Walk toward the wall, then turn left when you get to the street that parallels the wall. Walk a few hundred feet and you'll see a doorway in the wall. That's Porta San Pietro. Be sure to walk on the pedestrian part that goes through the wall cuz traffic there is just about as crazy as anywhere else. :) You can get up on the wall using the various big long ramps that are scattered around, I think in the vicinity of the doors through the wall. We walked through Porta San Pietro once, and I really don't remember where the top of the wall access was there (our B&B owners picked us up the other times we went in and out). Wherever you end up going, have a great trip! I loved all the places we went to: Verona, Venice, Florence, Lucca, Pisa, the Cinque Terre and Rome. Can't wait to go back!
