Hi, We will be traveling in Italy for two weeks in September and plan to use the rail system the entire time. We've never used. Someone told us about the Omio App for reserving Train, Bus, Air. I've downloaded and played around with it and it seems straightforward. Does anyone have experience with it and recommend it vs simply buying tickets at the station? This seems to be an easier more straight forward way of accomplishing, as it provides all carriers, days, times, etc. Thanks! Greg
I wouldn't use Omio as it will charge you an extra fee for booking any transport tickets. I've always used Trenitalia, which is the official Italian railroad site. It's the best option, imo, especially if you're mostly using rail travel. https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html
Thank you so much. I see that there is a trenitalia app, and a Italo app. Would you recommend using either of these apps, as they appear to be directed attached to the two train carriers.
Also, I presume no difference in taking Trenitilia vs Italo??
Thanks!!
Trenitali runs fast trains and regional trains

Use Italian station names
ItaloTreno runs only fast trains on select routes

Both apps are easy to use and are the official apps for the 2 operators
I wouldn’t use a third party app like Omnio
All about trains in Italy
( purchase tix on the official sites not 3rd party ItaliaRail as he suggests)

I agree with previous responses. I never use Omio for buying tickets but sometimes I find it useful for a quick comparison of train and bus options at one glance to get an idea of schedules and travel times that is more useful than Rome2Rio. However, there are many bus routes that do not show up in Omio, in my observation.
some people prefer the Trenitalia trains for long distance, some prefer Italo.
Same tracks, different equipment, similar speeds mostly, Italo tends to be a little cheaper.
I am one who prefers Italo. Buy me the ticket and I will happily ride on either.
If everything goes smooth as glass a third party reseller like omio may be ok. If anything goes wrong and you need help from the train company or to make a claim you will have to go through the third party who may or may not help. At all.
