Oltrarno neighborhood in Florence

First, how far is this area (walking) from the major sights such as the Duomo and the Ufizi museum? Would you recommend staying in this area? Any airbnb or vrbo recommendations that you've used and loved in Florence? Thanks

We were there last October and used VRBO and had a wonderful place - two bedroom and two baths husband, myself, son and girlfriend. I will try to get this information and post it for you. The woman who owned the apartment was so sweet, and she made us the most delicious tiramisu that we had ever had !! The apartment was clean, near the bus route and near a convenience store, as well as a few restaurants. Walked to Ponte Vecchio was 10-15 minutes or so (we are fast walkers !). I would recommend it in a heartbeat. One warning - do not park your car, if you have one, right outside the apartment. She had thought we could stay parked until 12 Noon, and we were out by 10 for the day and to drop off the car we had rented in Orvieto (would have done it on Sunday, but the place in Florence for drop=off was closed on Sundays), but went out on Monday morning to find a ticket. If you like to walk, it was reasonable, clean, and was run by a very kind, sweet lady - Sonia.

The Uffizi Gallery is next to the river and the Oltrarno neighborhood is literally the other side of the Arno river. GoogleMaps can estimate walking time or indicate bus routes, if you need to check a particular address.

No lodging help, but the Brancacci chapel in the church of Santa Maria Del Carmine is in that area, I think, and displays extraordinary frescoes by Masaccio. I would certainly suggest a stop if in the neighborhood. Have a great trip.

I've stayed in two different apartments. One was near Ponte Vecchio and was small and amazing (quite hidden). The other was much larger and spacious further down the river and I loved both places. I highly recommend http://www.acaciafirenze.com/en. Diana is very helpful and has lots of apartments to choose from.

My husband and I are staying in Oltarno when we go to Florence in September and we found an apartment on Airbnb. If you read reviews of apartments in Oltarno on Airbnb, you'll notice that reviewers loved the neighborhood because it's not super crowded / filled with tourists but it is still close walking distance (15 - 20 minute walk, per most reviewers).

We spent two months in the Oltrarno about 10 years ago and had morning Italian classes for 6 weeks not far from Santa Croce. The walk every morning down Via Romana and then across the Ponte Vecchio and through central florence to the school was just lovely. On our last trip a couple of years ago we stayed in an apartment for a week just past Porta Romana and walked through the Boboli gardens into the central area many days. Florence is tiny and easily walkable and the Oltrarno is a bit less tourist infested (only a bit) and a nice walk to the center. The Duomo and the Uffizi are both very near the Ponte Vecchio. We stayed in an apartment not far from Sante Croce a few years ago and had tour groups walking by with their loud guides all day and drunk American college students herding through the streets till late at night all of which we could hear from our terrace. Oltrarno was more pleasant (although there we had the occasional drunk Italian)
