Old iPhone

We have an old ATT iPhone that's been deactivated for over a year. Can we just take it to Italy, get a sim card, and use it there? Dave

Dave, The first thing you'll need to do is determine whether the iPhone is unlocked. Which iPhone model is it? As it's an older model, I'm assuming that it uses a normal-size SIM card, rather than a micro-SIM. Therefore you should be able to try it with a T-Mobile SIM card to see if that works. If it turns out that the phone is locked, you should be able to find information on the net on how to unlock it. I don't have any information on that, but you could check with AT&T. AFAIK, you should be able to get a PAYG SIM in Italy that allows voice and text use, but I'm not sure about data. Happy travels!

AT&T is now unlocking phones off contract, call them and have the phone unlocked, then you can get a SIM in Italy.

I just unlocked two of my old iPhones. Call AT&T (Customer Service; 1-800 331-0500) and tell them what you want to do, and they will walk you thru the procedure. Go to your "settings, about" section and find your IMEI number. Or find it printed on your SIM card tray. AT&T will want that number. Then will then send you an email. It will ask you to tether to ITunes, follow a procedure, and then it will be unlocked! (Make sure that you turn your phone on when you connect to Itunes. I could not get the procedure to work on one of my computers, but it worked on another. Don't try it if you have another USB device hooked up to your computer at the same time as you hook up the iPhone.) AT&T is unlocking old, out of contract, iPhones for current customers, and previous customers. If you are a previous customer make sure that you give them your old account number. That is your magic "ticket to ride'! The email can take as long as 5 seconds or two weeks to arrive. But the procedure works like a charm!
