Off the beaten track, rural central Italy - Molise?

Just looking around at regions in central Italy for off-the-beaten spots in rural areas. Molise looks interesting and not very touristy except for the mountain ski resorts. We'll be traveling in late June and so the mountainous areas might have some chance of being at least somewhat cooler. Anyone know anything about the Molise region? Anything about the towns in the area? We had so much fun finding funky rural spots in Burgundy last year that we'd like to see if we can have an Italian version of the experience this year. Thanks

Andrew, This is a fantastic area. I'm not sure of the actual Molise borders, but I've been to Campobasso, Teramo, Vasto and the Gargano peninsula. I encourage you to go, as there are many fascinating things to do and see whatever your interests. The Foresta Umbra on the Gargano is nearly the only area remaining of Italy's original forest. There's a jeep tour you can take there, described on WanderingItaly.com. In the weekly market at Vasto, peasants arrive from the surrounding rural areas and line the streets with blankets to sell their tiny production of produce. You can see the pathways created by the transhumanance, a seasonal migration of livestock herders that went on for centuries. Do the research and you'll be well rewarded.
