Off-the-Beaten Path Attractions in Florence?

I'm a history-buff so anything at all excites me. I'm looking for things in Florence, Siena, and Venice that are more obscure. Specific preserved Etruscan gates/walls, specific buildings, old tunnels, or churches that have underground sections/crypts. Really anything will do!

None of the things you name are really off the beaten track, but Viterbo has a small section of an Etruscan wall.

The church of San Clemente in Roma is one of many churches built on the foundation of a pagan temple.
