October weather in Tuscany

I have seen the temperature charts for the Tuscany area in October. Has anyone been there during the last two weeks of october? During your trip, how was the weather? Rain, hot, etc? Also during that time of the month, is there any color, fall foliage?

http://www.wunderground.com/tripplanner/index.asp will at least give you more info than the temperature charts you've looked at so far, which don't tell you much. When you get to the site, input the location (nearest big town) and your time span, and it will return lots of data. It's still just historical averages, but is probably at least as useful to you as anecdotal info from travelers ("yep, we were there 2 yrs ago, weather was fine.") NONE of us know what the weather will be like this October.

Hi Tom, I can only comment on our Tuscan experience in Oct. 2007 between Oct 06 and 15. The days were sunny and warm and the late afternoon and evenings were very cool. Our agriturismo in Montalcino was at 500 meters, approx 1600 ft.elevation and that seems to be fairly standard for much of Tuscany (not including the coast) We had light rain in Lucca but it wasn't cold (at least by our Vancouver Island standard). We found that we needed long pants and long sleeve tops (I used a light fleece top occasionally) with windbreakers after 4:00 pm. The days are much shorter so it is worth while to get on the road earlier in the day. Didn't find it as crowded on the roads as it was in mid-Sept. All of the harvesting had been done so the fields were empty and that Sienese brown colour. All the grapevines and trees were still green and lots of flowers still in bloom. Very beautiful. We're heading back in the Spring of 2012 to experience a different season. Enjoy. Sherry

I was in Tuscany during the last couple weeks of October last year. we stayed in an agriturismo high up in the hills outside San Gimignano and it was cold at night. On our last night (Oct. 31) we woke up the next day and there was frost on the car. Depending on where we were and how high the town was, the days were between 50s-60s I would say and largely very enjoyable for sightseeing. short-sleeve shirts, decent sweater, and a scarf for the breeze was all I felt I needed for daytime sight-seeing. All in all it was very nice weather except for one day of rain or so but there's no way to predict rain and I had some awful rain 3 years ago in Florence in early september, so you never know with that. Not too much foliage that I can recall. The worst thing is really that the time changes and the days are very short but the roads are empty so driving around is lovely, and the towns are kind of sleepy and lovely. Perhaps the best part of all is that the very end of October signifies the early start of the olive harvest. Tasting 12 hour old oil is one of the highlight experiences of my life! Feel free to look at my photos to see what the area looks like around that time of year: http://www.flickr.com/photos/debstah1/collections/72157622746637380/
