We are taking our adult children and our two young grandchildren (ages 2 & 4) to Italy in October to meet relatives and further explore our heritage. In addition, we will be spending 5 nights in Tuscany with day trips from that homebase. My husband and I have traveled some of the same terrain we will be visiting again on this trip but never with our family. We know we cannot take long car trips from point to point because of the young children. We would like suggestions of where to stay at the locations lisited below keeping in mind, rooms large enough for the family of 4 with the young children. Wherever possible when we are on the coast, we would like to stay at hotels that are on the sea or at least have a view of the water, hopefully not ultra expensive.
We will fly into FCO and leave for Giovinazzo (BA) stopping about midway to spend the night; looking at Avellino (ancestral ties but no known living relatives) or Benevento. Thoughts on this? Next day we arrive in Giovinazzo. Will spend only one night; just want our kids to see where grandmom was born. Next day will travel up the coast to Vasto (Abruzzo) and surrounding area to visit relatives. We will spend 3 nights there. Then we will travel up the coast to Giulianova to spend 2 nights there in order to meet with more relatives. When we leave Giulianova we will be going to Tuscany ( staying near Lucca). We know we will have to break up the drive because of the children. Thinking of taking the route that will bring us close to Bologna so we can spend the night there. Any thoughts about that? We will spend the next 5 nights in Tuscany (already have accomodations there.) We are leaving Tuscany for Rome the day before our flight leaves and spending the night at an hotel near the airport. Planning on taking the coastal route back down unless the the interior route is more interesting. Will need a good spot to take a break and have lunch. We appreciate any information about the planned itinerary but especially about places to stay.
