October Trip

My wife and I are traveling to Italy in October for my college reunion in Roma. We will arrive on Saturday and leaving on Monday of the following week. We will fly into Milan and need to be in Rome by Thursday Morning.

We plan to take the train to Florence, spend the day there and the night. Late in the day the next day, we will take the Bus/Train to Siena. I want to spend 2 nights in Sienna with either a day trip to some other town (Montepulciano, Montalcino, ....) or a wine tour.

I wonder if anyone has a suggestion for the day trip/wine tour. We are not a real go go go couple, we just enjoy each others company walking, seeing the architecture, watching and having a glass of wine. We aren't museum afficiandos by any means.

We will leave Sienna and go to Rome on Thursday AM. Does anyone have any suggestions on the transportation method. If we go by train, we have to back track to Florence (I think) and a bus ride gets us to Rome in about the same time frame.

Thanks

Hi John,
I'm going to make a suggestion that is different from the itinerary that you've proposed:

Saturday when you arrive, train from Milan to Verona (1.5-2 hours). Enjoy Verona and rest up from the trip. Monday train from Verona to Florence (3 hour trip) and spend Monday to Wednesday night in Florence. Leave Florence for Rome on Thursday AM (1.5-2.5 hour trip). Siena is an easy bus trip from Florence so you can spend a day in Siena. This way you won't will have fewer one night stays, you won't have to backtrack to go to Rome, and you'll get to enjoy wine in the beautiful piazza's of Verona.

We just finished a wonderful stay in Siena in May. We took a wine tour recommended in the Rick Steves book from Il Casato Viaggi. The guide is extremely personable and takes a lot of pride in showing off Tuscany. We did the San Gimiagno and Vernaccia Wine tour and had such a fabulous time we took the Chianti tour the next day.
