October travel

We are looking at Rick’s VFR tour for October and dates are open from the beginning of October to the first week of November. Is there any significant difference in general in traveling during that time? Closings or restricted hours of attractions? Daylight considerations over the month?

October and November are, on average, the wettest months of the year, and there will be a lot less sunlight, especially in November. On the other hand, you'll probably avoid extreme heat.

See the climate-summary chart in the Wikipedia entry for Rome: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rome

For actual, historical, day-by-day weather statistics over the last ten years or so, go to www.timeanddate.com:

Do check more than one year, because weather can vary a lot from year to year.

I love traveling in October, with (generally) mild weather. Yes, there may be restricted hours of some attractions, but your tour will have accounted for that. The shorter daylight hours can be an advantage in the sense that things will be "lit up" earlier to enjoy the lights. Independent travelers may find that some guided city tours/walks will run less frequently, but that would only be an issue for days that you spend on your own before or after the tour.

We too love October in Italy. It's not oppressively hot, you have cool to mild days, and it just feels good. We have also been in November and it does get a bit chillier and yes, the days shorter. But we would take those cool days anytime over hot and crowded.

Last time I went to Italy it was in October and I spent most of my time in Tuscany. I remember sitting out on the deck in swimsuit on a few warm, sunny afternoons. OTOH there were a couple of chilly, rainy days and a violent hailstorm one day. Pack layers. Trust RS tour organizers to plan around any closings and to make the most of the shorter hours of daylight.
