October train strike

I became alarmed at the other recent post concerning the upcoming Oct. 20 rail strike as this was not on my radar at all. We are planning to travel from Rome to Sorrento on Oct. 20 and then up to Florence on Oct. 23. The plan was to do this via train. I can't imagine having to rebook everything and, as most travelers do, we have a very tight schedule. Any advice on alternative transportation? Should I just wait and see or be proactive and deal with it now?

We used Aldo Limos, who were prompt and dependable. It's expensive, but would eliminate your train stress. I believe Mondo tours does shared transportation between Rome and Sorrento- check their website. Sorry you have to deal with all this. Good luck!

Assuming you are taking an high speed train, You don't need an alternative transportation between Rome and Naples/Salerno.

The Circumvesuviana may stop running during a strike or not. You can book a private driver or get info about buses. As an example, Flixbus has 2 runs from Piazza Garibaldi square to Sorrento at 11:45 and 16:40.

Hello MollieMn,

Certain trains are guaranteed to run here is a list of the fast trains:
https://www.trenitalia.com/content/dam/tcom/allegati/trenitalia_2014/informazioni/TABELLA_A_Treni_garantiti_DPLH.pdf

If I'm reading it right it looks like at least the 9539 Rome 17:00 to Naples 18:53 will go.
The guaranteed trains tend be early and late.

The local trains that connects Naples to Sorrento I have no idea on whether it will be running or not. But at least if you decided to engage a private driver or something it will be a lot cheaper from Naples than Rome. The strike - if it happens - will be from 9:00pm on Thursday to 9:00pm n Friday so trains after 9:00pm would, in theory, be running again.

No one seems to have any information about whether the other private fast train company will be honoring the strike.

There are local trains that are also guaranteed to go but I anticipate these will be crowded on strike day and you don't have reserved seats like on the fast trains.

Good luck,
=Tod
